Monetary penalties imposed by the UK Information Commissioner's Office jumped sharply in 2012, offering another example of the global regulatory emphasis on higher standards for information and data protection, and bigger penalties for firms that fall short of expectations. The ICO has wide latitude in levying fines, and the UK Information Tribunal last month rejected the first challenge to an ICO penalty — a strong indication that the ICO's approach is here to stay.
