6/16/15 - Thank Latvia: Council Gets Past Objections for GDPR General Approach

In his latest article in the International Association of Privacy Professionals’s Privacy Perspectives, Promontory Senior Principal John Bowman discusses the path to upcoming, trilogue negotiations on the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation — a single law that will establish the EU’s approach for protection of personal data in the digital era.

John highlights the role of the Latvian presidency of the Council of the EU in Bowman in promoting agreement among EU ministers in a June 15 vote on the general approach, and notes some of the points of contention among EU ministers. As he concludes, “What emerged from these discussions was clear political momentum in favor of concluding the text by the end of 2015. … The next six months will involve a lot of hard negotiations, but as this meeting of the Council demonstrated, where there is the political will to reach agreement, deals can be done.”
