3/5/18 - John Bowman on ECJ Jurisdiction Over Data Protection

Promontory Senior Principal John Bowman was quoted in an article by the International Association of Privacy Professionals on U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May’s focus on securing a data-protection agreement with the European Union.

Commenting on May’s “Five Tests” speech — in which May called for an end to the European Court of Justice’s jurisdiction in the U.K. — Bowman said: “Although ending ECJ jurisdiction is one of the U.K. government’s ‘red lines’ … The U.K. may still need to live with some ECJ involvement in data protection going forward, even if it does not specifically affect people in the U.K.”
