8/20/18 - GDPR Considerations for Blockchain Solution Architects

Promontory Principal Joseph Oehmke co-authored a white paper — with Salman A. Baset, IBM’s chief technology officer, security for blockchain solutions; and Graham Olsen, information architect with IBM Global Business Services — titled “GDPR considerations for blockchain solution architects.” It discusses blockchain vis-à-vis the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.

“Blockchain represents an important new kind of network infrastructure with several valuable benefits, including a ledger that’s distributed, immutable and permanent,” the white paper said. “However, these benefits also pose challenges to the principles of the GDPR. If at all possible, it’s preferable to avoid storing personal data on a blockchain. Where such storage does occur, anonymisation or encryption of personal data may not be a sufficient method to manage privacy over an indefinite period.”
