Barak J. Sanford

Managing Director

Mr. Sanford advises clients regarding strategic matters with a regulatory dimension, including regulatory applications, changes in business plan, corporate reorganizations, acquisitions, regulatory and policy advocacy, responses to enforcement actions, and crisis management. His practice includes advising financial institutions and investment managers seeking to start or acquire U.S. depository institutions, make significant changes to their existing depository institution subsidiaries, or subject new parts of their enterprise to bank regulatory supervision. He also helps clients monitor and understand regulatory and policy developments and respond to emerging issues arising from regulatory action or market events.

Before joining Promontory, Mr. Sanford was an attorney at the law firm of Covington & Burling, where he advised clients regarding a broad range of financial services regulatory matters; served as regulatory counsel in connection with mergers, acquisitions, charter conversions, and other transactions; conducted governance and management reviews of financial institutions; and assisted financial services clients with regulatory and legislative advocacy. He began his career as a law clerk to the Hon. A. Raymond Randolph of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Mr. Sanford earned a J.D., magna cum laude, from New York University School of Law and a B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Maryland, College Park.
